brown family park pavillion

The master plan for Nexton, a new community west of Charleston, SC, provided for a large gathering space to host outdoor events. The Park would be named for a family with long ties to the immediate area. A centerpiece pavilion was conceived as an anchor point for what would become a clearing within an existing pine forest. Borrowing heavily from the character of the adjacent pines, the open Pavilion structure is a series of peeled logs, graduated in height and arrayed around a 40’ diameter stage platform.  Heavy timber brackets further the association with branches forming the pine tree canopy. Stain and material colors were selected to be complementary to the natural surrounds.

St Paul's Episcopal church

This small historic church is centerpiece in a park like setting. Intended to resemble an ecclesiastical village seeking to integrate the older historic structures with the new buildings required by a growing parish. The central interior space is dominated by a dramatic, "hovering" cloud, suggesting a traditional Anglican symbol.
